Perfect start for Keller and Lill at the Cape Epic
A strong opening for Alessandra Keller and Candice Lill at the Absa Cape Epic: the Thömus maxon – Sabi Sabi duo won the prologue and made an immediate statement at the start of the prestigious stage race in South Africa.
The opening of the 2026 Cape Epic took place on the grounds of the Meerendal Wine Estate in Durbanville. On a 20-kilometre circuit with around 650 metres of climbing, riders were immediately confronted with the African heat, as temperatures of around 30°C created demanding conditions on the opening day.
Keller and Lill started the prologue in a controlled manner and quickly found their rhythm. On the technically demanding trails around the wine estate, the duo played to their strengths and set the fastest time in the elite women’s field.
“We had a clear plan for this prologue and managed to execute our strategy very well,” Keller said at the finish. “The win is a great first step, but it’s only the beginning. It’s a long race, so now it’s about staying focused day by day.”
The start of an intense race week
The prologue traditionally marks the beginning of the eight-day stage race, widely regarded as one of the toughest and most prestigious events on the international mountain bike calendar.
After their successful start, Keller and Lill will now focus on recovery and the challenges ahead. Tomorrow’s first stage covers 66 kilometres and 1,800 metres of climbing, taking the riders from Montagu to Montagu.
The other teams on the prologue podium were Courtney/Seiwald (USA/ITA) and Van Doorn/Looser (NED/NAM).
