Victory for Wiedmann at the Shimano Super Cup in Banyoles
Since last Monday the complete Thömus maxon team is in the training camp in Girona, Spain.
At the end of an intensive and productive week with many trainings, material tests and photo shoots, the team participated in the HC race Shimano Super Cup in Banyoles, 30 kilometers away.
Sprint win for Wiedmann
On Saturday Luke Wiedmann was at the start of the U23 race.
Before the race Wiedmann was still a bit unsure about his form.
However, already after his super start from the first row it became clear that Wiedmann has trained well in the past months and is in excellent shape.
On the fast circuit in Banyoles he rode tactically smart always in the first positions and was able to break away in the meantime together with the French champion Martin.
However, the group ran together again and so four riders went into the final laps together. Shortly before the finish, Wiedmann surprised his rival with an attack, did not relinquish the lead until the finish and celebrated his first victory of the season.
“It was a very tough race and I was able to implement what I set out to do. The victory gives me confidence for the next races.”
Keller in fourth place in the mud
On Sunday, the track presented itself soggy and muddy after overnight rain. Keller chose the right Schwalbe tire and handled the changed conditions well.
She rode in the chase group for third place from the second lap. In the last lap she could not follow the attack of last year’s world champion Richards and crossed the finish line in fourth place.
“I started great and felt very good. At the beginning I struggled a bit with the muddy conditions and even had to stop briefly in the tech zone. In the end, though, I’m happy with the race and the form fits.”
Good performances from Flückiger, Forster and Albin
In the men’s elite, Flückiger, Forster and Albin were three riders at the start.
Mathias Flückiger decided to start at short notice after the good training week and knew how to convince. He fought for the victory until the last meters and finally finished sixth.
“I am overjoyed to be back. Back with my team Thömus maxon, back in the racing circus. I decided spontaneously to start here. I don’t want to say more at the moment. Next week I will give a media conference in Switzerland.
Lars Forster showed a good premiere on the mountain bike in the Thömus maxon colors. At times he rode in the group with Flückiger and just missed the top ten as eleventh.
“For me it was a good first mountain bike race. I still lacked a bit of the tops but I’m satisfied.
Vital Albin rounded out the strong team performance with an 18th place. “It was a very hard race with many turns and starts. I gave my best and I am satisfied”
Team boss Näf draws a positive conclusion
Team boss Ralph Näf spoke of a successful test.
“The highlight was definitely Luke’s victory. The other riders also showed strong races.
At the training camp in Finale Ligure at the beginning of March, we can still fine-tune the technique and details. After that, we will make our season debut on Swiss soil on March 19 at the CIC ON Swiss Bike Cup in Gränichen.
