Flückiger rewarded with 5th place and diploma
Mathias Flückiger also wins a diploma in Paris. Although 5th place was not the medal he had hoped for. Nevertheless, Flückiger was able to draw a positive conclusion.
At 30 degrees, the men’s race turned into a real thriller, just like the women’s race yesterday. Mathias Flückiger was right in the middle of it. On the second lap, he set the pace at the front for around one and a half laps before the leading group exploded after an attack by Tom Pidcock (Gbr). Flückiger initially dropped back slightly, but quickly established himself in the group fighting for 4th place.
While the medals were decided in dramatic way between Pidcock, Koretzky (Fra) and Hatherley (RSA), Flückiger only had to let the Italian Braidot go in the final laps. Flückiger finished in 5th place and won another diploma, his second after Rio 2016.
“A series that I’m proud of”
Flückiger analyzed the finish honestly, self-critically, but also satisfied: “The result is not what I had hoped for. But I’m 98% satisfied with my performance and don’t have to blame myself. Sixth place in Rio 2016, silver in Tokyo 2021 and another diploma today – a series I’m proud of!”
