Mud battle in Greyton: Keller and Lill brave the conditions
Nerves of steel and flawless teamwork in challenging conditions: Alessandra Keller and Candice Lill delivered a commanding performance on the third stage of the Absa Cape Epic, overcoming adverse weather conditions to claim their fourth stage victory.
At 108 kilometres, the longest stage of this year’s race led from Montagu to Greyton and proved a real challenge due to the onset of rain and the resulting soggy trails. Muddy sections and the slippery ground demanded everything from the riders and made the race unpredictable.
The race remained open for long stretches. A large leading group stayed together until the intermediate time check at kilometre 87, before the two leading teams seized the initiative. With a well-timed attack, the Keller/Lill duo managed to break away from the remaining competition and create the decisive gap.
Lead in the general classification extended
“Kate and Greta attacked us today. We stayed calm and were able to counter successfully. Our plan worked out and I’m very happy with our teamwork,” explained Keller at the finish. “The weather definitely played a decisive role today.” At the finish, the lead over Courtney/Seiwald (USA/ITA), who finished second once again, was 1 minute 21 seconds.
With another stage win, Keller and Lill have further extended their lead in the overall standings. Team Thömus maxon – Sabi Sabi now hold a 4:52-minute lead over Courtney/Seiwald (USA/ITA).
Second half of the stage race starts in Greyton
Despite their “comfortable position”, the game plan remains clear: stay focused, minimise risks and get through the upcoming stages without crashes or mechanicals. The fourth stage is already on the programme tomorrow. It covers 61 kilometres around Greyton and promises another day of intense racing conditions.
The Cape Epic thus remains a race in which, alongside physical strength, consistency, teamwork and the right timing are the key factors determining overall success.
