Victory For Keller And Lill In The Fog Of Stellenbosch

Victory for Keller and Lill in the fog of Stellenbosch

Another impressive performance from Alessandra Keller and Candice Lill at the Absa Cape Epic: on the fifth stage, the two riders from Team Thömus maxon – Sabi Sabi secured another stage win and further extended their lead in the overall standings.

The stage, covering 90 kilometres and 2,150 metres of elevation gain, led towards Stellenbosch under difficult conditions. Rain, fog and soggy trails made the route particularly demanding. The sandy mud not only posed major challenges for the riders, but also put the equipment through its paces.

Keller and Lill took the initiative early on in the race and were able to pull decisively clear of the competition. With a strong and consistent performance, they continuously extended their lead.

Aggressive riding paid off
At the finish, the gap to the second-placed pair Courtney/Seiwald (USA/ITA) was a clear 9 minutes and 28 seconds. The third-placed duo Smith/Preen (CAN/RSA) were already over 11 minutes behind.

“I’d heard a lot about this stage – and having crossed the finish line, I have to say: what I was told is true. Riding to Stellenbosch is truly epic, and all the more so in these weather conditions with fog and rain,” Keller explained at the finish. “We attacked early and were able to build up a solid lead. That gives us confidence – but we both know that the race won’t be decided until the final day.”

Clear lead in the overall standings
With another stage win, Keller and Lill have further extended their lead in the overall standings. Team Thömus maxon – Sabi Sabi now hold a 14-minute 18-second lead over Courtney/Seiwald (USA/ITA). Despite this comfortable position, the focus remains on continuing the race in a controlled and error-free manner.
